Description

PattaChitra is the term used for traditional cloth based, scroll painting, primarily in the state of Odissa. In the Sanskrit, paṭṭa means “cloth” and chitra means “picture”. Most of these paintings depict stories of Hindu deities. This painting originated nearly 3000 years ago and now are protected with the Geographical Indications “GI” tag. These hand made paintings have intricate details. Their theme revolves around the stories of Jagannath Prabhu and also local folk tales. Pattachitra paintings can be divided into three categories – paintings on cloth called ‘Patta Chitra’, paintings on walls called ‘Bhitti Chitra’ and engravings on palm leaf called “Tada Patra Chitra’.

This hand made painting represents the “tree of life”, which is a fundamental archetype in many of the world’s religious and philosophical traditions. It is closely related to the concept of the sacred tree. It is hand painted on cloth and is perfect as an Indian cultural souvenir.
